Whether we like it or not, the world changes every day. People’s beliefs and values have transformed and we are now living in a more open-minded, objective society which doesn’t judge as much and accepts certain things easily. What was once considered inappropriate to wear in public is now just regular clothes you put on when going to the beach. What used to be rude to hear coming from a woman is observed as a friendly conversation starter. Two people kissing on the street was something a man and woman would only do in the privacy of their own bedroom; today – it is proof of pure love and nobody seems to mind.
It seems like everywhere we go or anything we do, we can’t help overhearing something with sexual innuendo. And we’ve probably got television to blame most for this. Nothing is off limits now – everything is allowed and this especially goes true for standup comedy. A comedian simply can’t perform unless they overwhelm the audience with vulgar humor. Dealing with adult-only topics, comedians have popularized dirty jokes so much that we’re used to hearing and couldn’t possibly imagine a show without them.
Yet, this was not always the case with off-color humor. Back in his day, Bill Shakespeare really fancied using hidden dirty jokes in his plays. Of course, the jokes weren’t as “dirty” as we know them today, but rather sexually inappropriate insinuations which were regarded as unfitting by his fellow writer counterparts. On the other hand, his bawdy humor was a favorite among his more common audience and highly anticipated in general.
Even in the 70’s and 80’s of the ever-modernized 20th century you could still rarely hear dirty jokes in public, unless you went to a nightclub somewhere in New York on a weekend. It wasn’t until the 90’s that this form of humor got ever-so-popular and started gaining its form that we are familiar with today. Comedians of the time like Dave Chapelle and George Carlin drew attention to censorship and openly criticized American society which made the genre only more prevailing. It was further reinforced by the television media that started broadcasting shows like “Beavis and Butt-head”, combining crude humor and a fair amount of social criticism in their funny jokes. This was also the decade of the appearance of “South Park”, another sitcom of the sort which is still widely watched today. A satirical portrait of the nation on its own, the show covers many different topics and exudes with unseemly language.
And here we are in the new millennium, tolerant and ready to take on a joke like never before.
